                        DESCRIPTION OF WORK

                        PAINTING, COLLAGE

                        I Once Was Lost
                        CANVASES, BOARDS, PAPER
Utilizing many of the techniques described in my other work, my works on paper, canvas, and boards proclaim my free spirit through expressive abstract imagery as well as natural study.  I love the naughty juxtaposition of contrasting dissimilar subjects or themes and yet find the combination of well-matched thoughts pleasing too.

Not wanting to limit myself, but rather wanting to push my comfort zone past boundaries has me exploring everything from spray paint to bitumen (thanks Gary)!

                        ASSEMBLAGE

                        MaidenShade.com
                        Aine (SOLD)
                        FAERIE & OTHER BOXES
Often referred to as assemblage art, mixed media includes, but are not limited to collage, altered books, altered objects, and so on, using a wide variety of mediums and unusual supplies.  Each medium has its own capabilities and limitations; combined, the media often complement each other.

Successfully creating this complementary and pleasing result, is how I produce my art.

My boxes are born from a place within where make-believe has never forsaken me, this gift is my writing.  Inspired by the possibilities and "what if's" I ponder, I usually begin by writing a story inspired by a line of folk-lore or a random thought that occurs to me.  This is translated onto a magical, 3-dimensional plane, and is further fleshed out by the accoutrements I also provide or at least offer.  (I can't help it, each box has to be "round" and complete.)

For example, one may purchase just the box or choose to include the "accouterments" of faerie dust, magical attractant item, the directions on how to attract a faerie, and/or the actual book I've written, or even a combination of these accessories.  Truly it is hard to say which came first, the story or the box.

                        FABRIC

                        COLLAGE WALL-HANGING

This art form, described by some as "Soft Painting", is essentially a layering of fabric pieces to produce the effects the artist wants to achieve.  Then, these shapes are sewn to a background fabric.

In my art, I have taken this basic expression to a much more personal place.   Some techniques used include:
                        • Hand dying, painting, image transferring, inking, and aging techniques bring depth and richness to my pieces.
                        • In addition to fabric, other mediums are also incorporated into each piece.
                        • I may employ assemblage at this point, use handmade papers and corrugated cardboard, quilt batting, tatted or crocheted items, as well as repurposed, recycled, and natural components.
                        • Embellishment from a variety of sources enriches and enhances the design elements and patterns of the collage, and an assortment of stitches are used to strengthen textural qualities.
                        • Many of the images I use are from the public domain.  Resurrected to live again and to be presented to the contemporary public through my work, they are reborn in my digitally altered art.

In conjunction with the complex constituents of these pieces comes a glimpse into this artist's very heart.
Within the work you will find this to be true as each story is revealed, and I weave my passion into every unique piece by choosing or writing a saying, quote and deeper description or explanation for each answering the oft asked question, "what does this one mean?"

This commitment to the whole, this deeply personal involvement and connection is what sets my work, in whatever medium, apart.
